One of the most comprehensive studies ever done on a state's Jewish community, A Corner of the Tapestry is the story - untold until now - of the Jews who helped to settle Arkansas and who stayed and flourished to become a significant part of the state's history and culture. LeMaster has spent much of the past sixteen years compiling and writing this saga. Data for the book have been collected in part from the American Jewish Archives, American Jewish Historical Society, the stones in Arkansas's Jewish cemeteries, more than fifteen hundred articles and obituaries from journals and newspapers, personal letters from hundreds of present and former Jewish Arkansans, congregational histories, census and court records, and some four hundred oral interviews in a hundred cities and towns in Arkansas. This meticulous work chronicles the lives and genealogy of not only the highly visible and successful Jews who settled in Arkansas, but also those who comprised the warp and woof of society. It is a decidedly significant contribution to Arkansas history as well as to the wider study of Jews in the nation.

In eight engaging chapters, this book portrays the steamboat era (1813-1963) on the Chesapeake, which matched in glamour and excitement the steamboats' history on the Mississippi. The book begins with the building of the first steamboat on the Bay in the shadow of the bitter struggle between Stevens, Livingston, Fulton, and Latrobe, among others, over monopoly on the Delaware and Chesapeake. Some of the accepted history on the origin of the first Bay steamboat is called into question. The chapters continue with stories of the genius of early engine builders, the legends arising from dramatic steamboat disasters, spirited adventures of the Civil War (including the mystery of the "French lady spy"), the romance of steamboat excursions and resorts, the personalities of many steamboats and their masters, the Pennsylvania Railroad's near achievement of monopoly on the Bay, and the denouement when trucks and automobiles eclipsed the role of the steamboat. An appendix details the workings of early steamboat engines. Other appendices provide data on steamboats discussed in the text and maps of the region. The narratives extend the history of the era from that included in other books on the topic. The book, above all, is an enthusiastic, nostalgic, and thoroughly readable exposition of a bygone era and a "vanished fleet".

This is a history of the great age of scholastism from Abelard to the rejection of Aristotelianism in the Renaissance, combining the highest standards of medieval scholarship with a respect for the interests and insights of contemporary philosophers, particularly those working in the analytic tradition. The volume follows on chronologically from The Cambridge History of Later Greek and Early Medieval Philosophy, though it does not continue the histories of Greek and Islamic philosophy but concentrates on the Latin Christian West. Unlike other histories of medieval philosophy which divide the subject matter by individual thinkers and emphasise the parts of more historical and theological interest, this volume is organised by those topics in which recent philosophy has made the greatest progress.
